Promise of Comfort

Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your mat, and walk."

John 5:8

Jesus said to him, Get up, take up your bed, and walk. Command triplets: get up, take up, walk. Jesus meets a long paralysis with verbs. Bed carried becomes testimony—what carried you now is carried. Walk is new responsibility. Some healings require immediate embodied response. Get up from resignation. Take up the mat of your old identity as only helpless. Walk into obedience you could not attempt before. If you are still waiting on full strength, practice the verbs in hope: spiritual rising, small physical steps, refusal to camp forever in the identity of the mat. The poolside man heard a voice stronger than thirty-eight years. Listen for that voice in Scripture and prayer. Then move. Walking people encourage other mat-dwellers to listen for Jesus too.

PrayerLord Jesus, say to me get up, take up, walk—and give strength to obey the verbs of healing hope. Amen.
