The Better Way
Mark 10:7For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will join to his wife.
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife. Mark echoes Genesis with leave and hold fast. Leaving unfinished keeps marriages stuck in childhood orbits—seeking approval, dumping conflict on parents, refusing adult loyalty. Holding fast is active cleaving when emotions cool. Talk honestly about leaving dynamics if they strain your home. Honor parents without obeying them as primary board of directors over your marriage. Hold fast in public and private speech. August family visits can test this balance; prepare kindness and clarity. God wants new households to stand. Cleaving is not cruelty to parents; it is obedience to a deeper design. Reaffirm your primary human loyalty where it belongs, and work out the practical edges with grace.
PrayerLord, help spouses leave well and hold fast well—honoring parents while cleaving to one another in You. Amen.
