A Steady Heart

Brothers, I don't regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before.

Philippians 3:13

Paul refuses to claim arrival; he does one thing: forgetting what is behind and stretching forward. Forgetting here is refusing to be ruled by past credentials or past failures. Stretching is athletic—effort toward what lies ahead in Christ. Lent memory should include confession, then release. If shame keeps replaying forgiven scenes, practice holy forgetting that trusts God's cleanup. If nostalgia for an earlier "better you" blocks present obedience, stretch instead. One thing protects you from scattered spirituality. Aim your attention. Tomorrow's faithfulness needs today's forward lean. Stretching forward will feel awkward if you have lived curled around regret. Awkward is still progress. Past trophies and past wrecks both make poor steering wheels. One clear aim beats a dozen half-pursued spiritual hobbies that never leave the notebook.

PrayerLord, free me from living in the rearview mirror. Help me forget what You have forgiven and stretch toward what You still have for me. Amen.
