Return to God
Joel 2:13Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to the Lord, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity.
Ash Wednesday calls for torn hearts, not torn fabric as theater. Joel summons genuine turning to a God who is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness. Ashes without repentance are costume; repentance without hope in God's character becomes despair. Lent begins with honesty about sin and equal honesty about mercy. Tear the heart means let sorrow reach the will—habits, apologies, restored justice. Turn toward God, not merely toward self-improvement. If you receive ashes today, let them speak mortality and grace together. The Lord who invites return has not slammed the door. Begin the fast of true sorrow and true trust. Torn hearts hate sin without hating hope. Hold grace and mercy as tightly as you hold sorrow over what must change.
PrayerGracious and merciful God, I tear my heart and turn to You. Mark this Lent with real repentance and confidence in Your loving kindness. Amen.
