Mercy Between Us
1 John 4:19We love him, because he first loved us.
We love because He first loved us. Sequence saves you from exhausting self-starting. First love is God's initiative in Christ; our love is echo and overflow. If affection for God or people feels dry, do not merely try harder at emotion—return to being loved. Read a Gospel scene of Jesus' compassion. Recall specific mercies. Let "first" restore order. Loving Him and loving others then become responses rather than performances to earn a turn. January cold can match emotional cold; counteract both with deliberate remembrance. Speak aloud: He loved me first. Then ask whom that love wants to reach through you before the day closes. Being loved first is the only sustainable starting line for a tired heart. Let remembrance warm what willpower alone cannot thaw.
PrayerFather, thank You for loving me first. Rekindle my love for You and for others as a response to Your initiative, not as a lonely project. Amen.
