Patient Hearts

Many waters can't quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly scorned.

Song of Solomon 8:7

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised. Love's endurance outlasts floodwaters; it cannot be bought without becoming contemptible. Quench and drown imagery fit pressures that try to extinguish covenant affection—conflict, distance, hardship. Wealth cannot purchase real love; offers that treat love as a commodity deserve disdain. Hold fast to love that floods cannot drown: marry prayer to patience, stay when leaving would be easier, refuse to put a price on faithfulness. In Christ, God's love for His people withstands every flood. That unquenchable love can shape yours. When waters rise this summer, name love as the thing you will not allow to be extinguished, and take one action that proves it.

PrayerLord, many waters cannot quench love—keep our love unquenchable, and keep us from trying to buy what only faithfulness can hold. Amen.
